Double-Sided Mithraic Relief

Double-sided marble relief depicting the god Mithras. Rome, 2nd-3rd cent. Mithras is a Persian god introduced to Rome as a mystery religion in the second half of the 1st century CE. The religion was especially popular with soldiers and involved multiple levels of initiation. This side shows Mithras slaying the bull; the other shows him banqueting with the sun.
