2006 Muslim Holiday Calendar

Following are the dates of 2006 Muslim holidays. Note that not all Muslims celebrate all these holidays; the only universally recognized Muslim holidays are Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. See Muslim Holidays for more information.

January 31 , 2006 — Al-Hijira, Islamic New Year
Marks the migration of Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina.
February 9, 2006 — Ashura
Islamic holy day observed on the 10th of the Islamic month of Muharram. Shi'ite Muslims regard it as a major festival marking the martydom of the Prophet's grandson, Hussein.
April 11, 2006 — Mawlid an-Nabi, Birthday of Muhammad
Shia Muslims celebrate this five days later. Some Muslims do not approve of celebrating the birthday, regarding it as a religious innovation.
August 22, 2006 — Lailat al Miraj
Celebrates the Prophet Muhammad's heavenly journey from Mecca to Jerusalem in a single night.
September 9, 2006 — Lailat-al-Bara'h, Night of Forgiveness 
A night devoted to seeking forgiveness for sins. Muslims believe that on this night one's destiny is fixed for the year ahead.
September 24, 2006 — Start of Ramadan
Ramadan is the month of fasting, one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
October 20, 2006— Lailat al-Quadr, Night of Power  
Marks the night in which the Qur'an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by Allah.
October 24, 2006 — Eid-Al-Fitr
The end of Ramadan when Muslims celebrate the end of fasting and thank Allah for His help with their month-long act of self-control.
December 20, 2006 — Hajj (start)
The annual pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims should complete at least once in their lifetime.
December 31, 2006— Eid-Al-Adha
Festival of Sacrifice at the end of Hajj. A four day holiday.
